Mr. Kermit Phipps is the Director of EMC Services for AMS Corporation. Mr. Phipps was formerly with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and held the position of Project Engineer/Scientist specializing in electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) and power quality (PQ). He has more than 25 years of experience in civilian research, consulting service, and technical military service. He is certified as an EMC engineer by the International Association of Radio and Telecommunications Engineers (iNARTE).
In his 20-year tenure at EPRI, he investigated the performance and characteristics of electronic and electrical systems, custom power-conditioning systems, energy storage devices, and alternative-energy systems. Many of his investigations centered on ensuring electromagnetic compatibility of end-use equipment, with electric power systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
Besides his specialized research in EMC, his research and testing also included: grounding, lightning protection, as well radiated and conducted electromagnetic environments. He has conducted numerous EMC and PQ training sessions and field investigations and has designed several generations of custom EMC equipment.
Mr. Phipps is the author of test plans, protocols, book chapters, and research papers presented at international power quality and EMC conferences. He is an active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) EMC Society at the national level—where he has served as Chair of TC-4 technical committee on EMI control. He is the Chair of IEEE Standard 1560 entitled “Methods of Measurement of Radio Frequency Power Line Interference Filter.” Most recently, he served as Secretary for IEEE Standard P299.1 for shielding effectiveness measurements, and was past secretary for the IEEE EMC Society Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). He is currently a member of the EMCS Standards Development Committee (SDCom) and the IEEE EMCS Board of Directors.
